WEST GENERAL ROBINSON STREET GARAGE
Pittsburgh, PA

A proposed underground light rail transit station, with its entrance integrated into the street level of the garage, will provide a quick and easy connection to downtown.

The site is located on General Robinson Street between the two stadiums and is surrounded by elevated highways. The design was developed in a Joint Venture with Walker Parking Consultants and accommodates 1,233 cars in a 10-story integrally colored pre-cast concrete structure. Design challenges included accommodating high peak loading and unloading demands during events, allowing for the construction of the light-rail transit tunnel through the site after the completion of the garage, providing flexibility for a Phase 2 garage to be built over the light rail tunnel and reconciling the macro scale of the parking structure and surrounding highways with the pedestrian scale along General Robinson Street.

The placement of the building’s vertical circulation components and the form of the structure offer dramatic views of the building for drivers traveling on the surrounding highways. In addition, there are dramatic views from the building of the city’s downtown skyline, stadiums and rivers.

At the smaller scale of the pedestrian streetscape along General Robinson Street, the garage lobby, light rail “T” entrance, and two-story retail building establish a pedestrian scale and activate the street. During events, large overhead doors in the garage lobby will be raised to allow a free flow of sporting event crowds up into the over-sized stairs to encourage use of the stairs and reduce the load on the elevators.
