Community Revitalization ProjectsSeptember 2, 2005
PWA has several community revitalization projects underway in former steel towns in the Monongahela River Valley. These projects involve new housing, (rental and for-sale), renovations, infrastructure improvements, and streetscape improvements to help restore neighborhoods that are beginning to recover from the loss of local industry in the 1970s. These are “scattered site” projects for institutions and non-profits that strategically place new or renovated housing on key blocks and at key intersections to replace blight, to transform the image of neighborhoods, and to encourage private reinvestment. Delivery systems include stick-built and modular construction. Projects are currently underway in Braddock, Clairton, and McKeesport.
Housing for SeniorsSeptember 2, 2005
PWA is recycling a former nursing home as apartments for seniors for the Little Sisters of the Poor. The building is a 5 story brick structure circa 1972 that had outlived its usefulness as a care center, but that proved to be a good subject for adaptive reuse as an apartment building. This ‘new’ facility, which is yet to be named, will provide 44 apartments and generous community space. Construction will begin in late 2005.
Museum RenovationSeptember 2, 2005
PWA has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of General Services for the renovation of the Drake Well Museum operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. In addition to being the first renovation since the facility was constructed in 1963, the project will support a number of new exhibits, including one tracing the boomtown oil years in Bradford, PA.
